Artificial intelligence features continue to revolutionize photo editing in this latest feature from Skylum for its editing software, Luminar Neo.
The new tool is Portrait Background Removal, which does exactly what it sounds like – lets users remove the background from a portrait and make it transparent. The key feature, powered by AI, is that it can be done with just one click.

Skylum says the new tool can even handle complex hair selections, like the example above, which is often one of the most tedious and time-consuming parts of background removal. He says there will likely still be scenarios where manual masking is needed, but the estimate is that the tool will be able to do up to 90% of the job.
Once you’ve created the background for a portrait, Luminar Neo lets you export the image in PNG format for compositing, or you can use layers to create a different background.
