Jonathan Vela, MD, decides it’s time to consider CBD treatment for chronic pain

Jonathan Vela, MD, Department of Rheumatology Aalborg Denmark, spoke with HCPLive about a study he presented at the American College of Rheumatology 2021 Convergence.

The study “Cannabidiol Treatment in Hand Osteoarthritis and Psoriatic Arthritis – A Double-Blind, Placebo-Randomized Trial” examined the effectiveness of cannabidiol (CBD) treatment for osteoarthritis-related pain. hand (OA) and psoriatic arthritis (RP).

There was no statistically significant effect of CBD on the intensity of clinical pain in patients with hand osteoarthritis or psoriatic arthritis compared to the control group. The researchers also looked at the effects on sleep quality, depression, anxiety, and catastrophic pain scores and still found no significant results.

In Denmark, CBD is not as popular as it is in the United States, but it is starting to gain attention. Vela explained that patients asked her if CBD could help relieve their chronic pain.

“We tried to review the literature,” Vela said, “and we found that there was actually no suitable randomized controlled trial of CBD for pain and chronic pain. So we decided to to study.”

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or paracetamol are currently the main medical treatments for chronic pain in Denmark, according to Vela. They don’t use opioids.

Most of the time, Vela said, they use pain education and exercise or movement programs to treat chronic pain in patients.

The primary outcome measure was the intensity of pain over the past 24 hours (0-100 mm). Explaining the study, Vela pointed out that patients with psoriatic arthritis did not have active arthritis at the time of the study. Patients were given 20 to 30 mg of CBD or a placebo per day for 12 weeks.
